2017 BLEND Awards

September 27th, 2017

by Kyle Thrapp, Assoc. AIA

We are excited to announce that we received a BLEND Award for our 1924 Bungalow Addition!  The awards ceremony was held at Fulton Brewery in Minneapolis’ North Loop on Monday Night.  Since 2007, the Buildings and Landscape Enhancing Neighborhoods through Design (BLEND) awards architects, builders, designers and homeowners for their excellence in blending residential or commercial construction projects into Minneapolis neighborhoods.

This small addition resulted in doubling the size of the cramped bungalow kitchen.  The kitchen now ties in seamlessly with the fine craftsmanship throughout the home, while the addition’s exterior respects the scale, massing, and character of the neighborhood.

Another Great Minneapolis Saint Paul Home Tour!

May 1st, 2017

by Kyle Thrapp, Assoc. AIA

What a great time we had showing off two beautiful projects this past weekend! McMonigal Architects was pleased to take part in the Minneapolis Saint Paul Home Tour which celebrated its 30th anniversary.

During Saturday and Sunday’s tour at 5344 Emerson Avenue South (Home #10), visitors were able to hear how moving and turning an existing stair avoided a potentially costly large addition to the home, and see how a kitchen with a clean, modern aesthetic can fit within a 1927 Tudor. They heard how phasing two projects over ten years made it possible to improve the layout and function of the home initially, and get their dream kitchen in the end.

At 4516 Grand Avenue South (Home #8), tour-goers marveled at how a small addition resulted in doubling the size of the cramped bungalow kitchen. The kitchen now ties in perfectly and the fine craftsmanship of both new and old is now evident throughout the home. On Sunday, Rosemary’s presentation on bungalow remodeling drew quite the crowd – over 50 people inside and anxious others listening from the front steps and the back porch.

At both houses, it was fun to display presentation boards from and reminisce on Rosemary and Jim’s Johnson Street home that was on the tour 30 years ago.

McMonigal Architects partners with NorthEast Investment Cooperative

March 13th, 2017

by Phil Hofstad, Associate AIA

You’ve all heard of food co-ops, but what about buying into a whole neighborhood?  That’s exactly what the NorthEast Investment Cooperative (NEIC) in Minneapolis is doing.  By donating a portion of its services, McMonigal Architects partners with NEIC on proposed renovations to commercial properties.  We work with NEIC and potential tenants to develop economical solutions that aim to sustainably reuse and bring new life to tired and vacated old buildings.  Extensive field measuring and investigation, detailed code analysis, and creative design solutions for the building facades are part of the process.

MN SNAP’s building is now open!

September 30th, 2016

by Kyle Thrapp, Assoc. AIA

MN SNAP, Spay Neuter Assistance Program, has a new facility!  Located in Northeast Minneapolis, its new building enables the organization to further its mission to provide “both high-quality, affordable and accessible spay and neuter services to those in need and animal welfare education in the community.”  Their important work “reduces the influx of homeless pets into rescues and shelters.” As part of a design team aimed at helping MN SNAP get a space that everyone can be proud of, McMonigal Architects donated its design services.  We selected bright, but calming, colors to enliven the space.  Donated tile throughout ensures durability with the frequent cleaning of the space.  As one MN SNAP worker put it, “We love the space, especially the colors, so much that it is fun to come walk through it every day!”
